METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT Gets His Dream Car
August 10, 2004C.W. Nevius of the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett has bought a 1936 Ford coupe done up by custom car legend Cole Foster of Salinas Boys Customs. Nearly finished, the car will make its debut at the Goodguys 18th West Coast Rod and Custom Nationals at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds, Aug. 27-29. (Info at www.good- guys.com. or (925) 838-9876.)
"I actually met Cole through Billy Gibbons of ZZ TOP," Hammett told the San Francisco Chronicle. "We talked and I thought I might have to ask him to build me a car."
He did, and Foster has been tinkering ever since. The result is an aficionado's dream, with swooping front fenders and a tucked rear deck and only a few hints of the power that lies within. Unlike METALLICA singer James Hetfield's custom rod — a show-stopping chopped coupe with chrome exhaust pipes and garish paint job — Hammett's subtle blue '36 will be more likely to earn appreciative nods from connoisseurs.
"A lot of people would have gone with a '50s car," Hammett said. "But I always had my eye on those Ford coupes from the '30s. Just the way those rear wheel wells look. It's a good-looking sled, man." Read more.
